UT Policy—Safety and Health

It is the responsibility of each department or unit to support or enforce policies and procedures created to ensure the safety and health of our students, faculty, staff and visitors.

If you have questions about any of the policies or procedures listed below, please call our office at 423-425-5741.

UTC Deans, Directors, and Department Heads are responsible for:

  1. Ensuring employees are aware of all applicable safety and health rules and regulations.
  2. Training their employees in any safety and health plan or procedure applicable to their area and documenting this training.
  3. Establishing and implementing operational procedures for safety and health on a departmental level as needed or required.

In addition, departments who use hazardous materials are responsible for:

  1. The maintenance of a hazardous materials inventory, which is to be updated annually and forwarded to Safety and Risk Management.
  2. The maintenance of Safety Data Sheets (formerly known as Material Safety Data Sheets or MSDS) for each hazardous material used. These sheets must be maintained in a central location, accessible to all employees.

Safety and Environmental Health Program

"The University of Tennessee Safety and Health Plan for Employees" was developed to meet the standards established by the Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Act, Tennessee Code Annotated §50-3-101 et seq., as a self-inspecting agency. This plan is updated periodically and subsequently approved by the university's president's staff.

You have the right to a safe workplace. The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 was passed to prevent workers from being killed or seriously harmed at work. The law requires employers to provide their employees with working conditions that are free of known dangers. The Act created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which sets and enforces protective workplace safety and health standards. OSHA also provides information, training and assistance to workers and employers.

Ensuring food safety is a serious responsibility when serving food to the public.  Whether you are a UTC employee or a student organization planning a special event, this ServSafe training will teach you how to safely serve and maintain food during an event.

Training is available through our office. If you would like to schedule a training session, please contact our
office at 423-425-5741.
